3 Reasons to Fix Tooth Crowding

Posted on: October 10, 2018

In most cases, tooth crowding doesn’t pose any risk to one’s oral health. However, there are times when one should seriously consider fixing their tooth crowding issue through the utilization of teeth straightening techniques, such as braces or clear aligners.

When to Fix Tooth Crowding

While tooth crowding typically isn’t a call for health concern, it can affect one’s daily routine. Also, tooth crowding can, in many cases, affect an individual's self-esteem and create self-doubt in social situations in ways one might not feel when they are confident with their smile.

Here are three times when one should consider fixing their tooth crowding issue:

Unable to Clean Teeth Properly

One of the most common concerns with teeth crowding, and yet one of the most neglected concerns, is the inability to clean teeth properly, which is the most important aspect to maintaining clean, healthy teeth. When an individual has crowded teeth, they may not be able to reach certain parts of a tooth without great difficulty. As a result, those with crowded teeth are typically at a higher risk of developing cavities and suffering from toothaches as they age. The moment a tooth becomes hard to brush, or in some cases seemingly impossible to clean, it is time to visit an orthodontist and find out all options that are available to deal with the issue.

Chewing Becomes Difficult

Having difficulty chewing food is one of the more noticeable complications related to tooth crowding. Although a mild form of tooth crowding won’t result in complete changes to one’s eating pattern, a more severe form may make it tough to chew food naturally. When teeth are crowded, it typically results in the form of malocclusion, including overbites, underbites, and crossbites. While most people have a mild type of malocclusion, a more severe form of malocclusions caused by tooth crowding can significantly hinder one’s ability to chew food properly. In the event chewing becomes difficult in a manner that affects your daily routine and eating habits, it is important to seek treatment options so that you can return to the days of eating whatever you want in any manner you want to eat it.

Self-Esteem is Damaged

The most concerning adverse side effect of crowded teeth is the effect crowded teeth might have on one’s self-esteem and confidence in social situations. Many who suffer from overcrowded teeth become highly insecure about the quality and aesthetic value of their smile, and subsequently become far too self-aware in social situations, fearing others will notice their teeth if they smile too big. However, the issue of crowded teeth can easily and rather quickly be fixed by scheduling a consultation with your local orthodontist and considering all treatment options. While the common reaction for many adults is that braces will cause even more insecurity, there are forms of braces that are much less noticeable than traditional metal braces, including ceramic braces, lingual braces, and Invisalign.
