When it comes to teeth straightening treatments for adults, most people would rather go with more subtle options. That works out quite well since most devices used these days are a lot less noticeable than those used a few decades ago.
All of these teeth straightening treatments work by gradually pushing a person's teeth into their proper positions. This article will take a look at some of the most popular orthodontic devices used to straighten adult teeth.
4 Orthodontic devices for teeth straightening
1. Traditional metal braces
These devices have been used to straighten teeth for over a century. They can be used safely on children and adults. These type of braces consist of metal brackets that are placed on each tooth. The brackets are connected to one another for each set of teeth. When the wires are tightened, it pushes the person's teeth towards the desired position.
Metal braces are often recommended by dentists to people who are dealing with severe teeth alignment issues. They are also recommended for those who might have issues wearing other devices as recommended.
2. Clear braces
Clear braces are a subtler version of traditional metal braces. These also come with brackets placed on every tooth, but instead of metal, tooth-colored ceramic brackets are used. Instead of metal wires, transparent ones are used.
Clear braces can be used to address a variety of dental issues, and the design makes it a lot harder to tell when a person has these types of braces on their teeth.
3. Lingual braces
These are the least popular out of the methods we have explored today, but they are one of the options patients have to choose from. The device consists of metal brackets and wires like traditional braces, but instead of being fixed to the front of the person's teeth, lingual braces are installed behind them.
It makes lingual braces the least visible type of braces. The one major downside that keeps some people away from lingual braces is the fact it is also one of the most uncomfortable orthodontic devices. It can take a while for the patient to get used to having metal brackets touching their tongue.
4. Clear aligners
Clear aligners are the future of orthodontic treatments. They have become very popular in recent years and for many good reasons. Clear aligners allow patients to get the treatment they need without them having to worry about people staring at an unsightly orthodontic device on their teeth.
Clear braces are virtually undetectable when worn. The patient gets several aligner trays that are made from digital images of the person's teeth. Each tray is used for a couple of weeks and it takes the person's teeth closer to their proper position.
Clear aligners are often worn for a period of about six months to a couple of years.
