With so much new and emerging technology, it is easy to overlook the importance of a braces specialist in straightening one’s teeth.Even with advances in technology, braces are still the most effective way of straightening of people’s misaligned teeth and fighting malocclusion. Braces specialists have been working for decades making sure that teenagers, young adults, and even adults have the straightest and most beautiful smile possible by using orthodontics to straighten their crooked teeth.
It is easy to get caught up in all the hype, and carefully crafted marketing, regarding products that offer to straighten teeth without being overtly visible to other people. The reality is that all of these products work virtually the same way as braces. The main difference is the cost of treatment being much higher with less-visible options.
Because they are the oldest technology, and hence the most developed, braces can be used in a cost-effective manner in order to straighten teeth that may otherwise cost significantly more using some of the newer technologies. For patients that want straighter teeth on a budget, braces are often the best option.
As a braces specialist, we will be the first to acknowledge that new and emerging technology is based on exactly the same methodology used by braces. In fact, advances in braces technology are what has led to the uptick in all of these new devices offering to straighten people’s teeth. Braces themselves have undergone several metamorphoses, and the ones used today are a far superior technologically that has advanced in the scientific application of pressure on the teeth.
Ultimately, it is important to remember that the basic methodology and physics used by braces is the same technology that has made it possible to straighten teeth using aligners or alternative methods.
How It Works
Often times patients, particularly young patients, wants to know how braces actually work. It is a simple theory. They work by using a series of brackets, wires and rubber bands to exert a certain amount of pressure on the teeth that needs to be moved. As the pressure increases, teeth gradually start to move out of a misaligned position and into a better alignment.
The reason why it takes a significant amount of time for braces to move teeth is this process fights against the natural inclination of the teeth and cannot be forced too quickly for risk of damaging the teeth and roots. Hence, it takes time for teeth to be safely realigned.
