What is the minimum age required to book an appointment with the orthodontist?

According to the American Association of Orthodontists, kids should be at least 7 years old before an orthodontic screening. At that age, they would have grown most of their permanent teeth, which would enable a more efficient evaluation.

Can you play instruments or engage in physical activities with kids’ braces?

Some kind of adjustments may be necessary few days after getting your braces, but it will not deter you from actively engaging in school activities. If you participate in contact sports, ensure you wear a mouth guard to shield your teeth and braces.

Do you still require periodic dental checkups after getting braces?

Yes. People under orthodontic treatment require regular visits to the dentist. With braces, brushing is more difficult than usual, and food bits can be trapped where your toothbrush cannot reach. This causes bacteria buildup that can result in gingivitis, gum disease, and cavities.

Regular visits to the dentists will ensure your teeth remains clean and healthy with braces on.

Is it possible get orthodontic treatment with baby teeth?

It is possible. Some orthodontic conditions can be severe enough to necessitate immediate or corrective treatment. Early detection can help prevent complicated procedures afterward. If the patient is not mature, some kind of follow up may be necessary so that treatment can begin immediately the time is right.

Should I avoid specific food while wearing braces?

Yes. There are specific meals you should avoid with kids’ braces. You should avoid ice, raw vegetables, hard candies, and all sticky foods such as taffy and caramel. This will save you from emergency visits to the orthodontist to repair damaged braces. Chewing sugar-free gums such as Orbit or Trident can help clean your teeth.

How long would you need to wear the braces?

The duration of treatment is dependent on the patient’s orthodontic condition. Typically, orthodontic treatment length is between 12 to 30 months. Most people only have to wear the kids’ braces for about 22 months.

How frequently do you have appointments?

The patient’s requirements determine their appointment schedules. Most people only have appointments once every one or two months.

Are braces painful?

Usually, braces should not hurt, but some minor discomfort may happen briefly after the orthodontist tightens the braces. Following an appointment, you may experience soreness in your teeth for a few days. If that happens, pain relievers like Tylenol or Advil should help.

Will your teeth straighten out with growth?

No, they will not. The space present in the front teeth does not widen with age. In most cases, the space left in the front teeth reduces after the permanent molars grow.

Do you need to brush more frequently?

After getting your braces, you should brush your teeth up to three times daily for good oral hygiene. Brushing frequently will ensure that there are no food leftovers between the braces. Flossing daily can also help clean areas where your toothbrush cannot reach.
