#1. Learn what to avoid
In this case, avoidance is key for maintaining oral health and ensuring that one’s braces do not sustain damage by what someone is eating. Patients need to avoid anything that is terribly hard or crunchy since it can place undue pressure on the brackets and cause them to move out of position. Additionally, some foods that are very hard can even damage the teeth and chip the enamel.
If one damages a tooth, then we may need to temporarily remove the braces so that a general dentist can make the repair. Afterward, we will then have to place the braces back on the teeth and increase the amount of time the patient needs to wear the braces fo due to the entire process. In this light, also avoid anything sticky or high in sugar since those things can cause damage and increase the risk for tooth decay.
#2. Drink plenty of water
Staying hydrated is absolutely critical. Drinking lots of water will help to keep the mouth moist and ensure that food particles and plaque are washed away from the teeth on a regular basis. Any food particles that the braces trap will increase the risk of developing tooth decay or gum disease, so carrying a water bottle throughout the day is a wise idea.
#3. Carry a toothbrush and floss
Buy several portable toothbrushes and small packs of floss to keep on-hand. Place one in the car, and a bag or purse and at the office. This way, a toothbrush is always available after eating meals or snacks. The goal is to remove food particles as quickly as possible to prevent the buildup of plaque and cavities. Brushing regularly also decreases the risk of staining.
