Early orthodontic treatment is a great way to help ensure your child's oral health is on track before dealing with repercussions later. While most parents aim to provide their child with the best dental care possible, it can often be hard for a variety of reasons. As children grow up, their teeth also change significantly — whether they lose them or whether they grow in unevenly. At a young age, most parents and their dentists agree that their child may need braces or aligners, otherwise known as a way straighten the teeth out.

Straightening of the teeth through orthodontic treatment can provide a child with a more appealing smile as well as healthier teeth. Having straight teeth isn’t just necessary for an aesthetic purpose, but it’s also important in order to avoid oral problems that can occur from crooked teeth.

Today, we will discuss both the pros and cons of early orthodontic treatment. Some may say it’s best to begin orthodontic treatment at an early age while others may attest and say waiting until one is older is better. Here, we will go over both:

Pros of early orthodontic treatment

Less invasive and less painful

When orthodontic treatment is begun at an early age it allows for the teeth to be adjusted before the roots and bone structure are both fully developed. Thus meaning that there won’t be as much pain involved because the roots and bones are not fully in place yet, they are still growing in. Early orthodontic treatment also isn’t as invasive, again, because the roots and bone structure are not fully developed yet.

Reduces the duration

When a person begins orthodontic treatment at an early age, they are less likely to have a need for braces or aligners. When treatment is begun earlier on, a person may not need to endure braces or aligners for long periods of time. Some people experience a lot of complications with braces and aligners so attempting to reduce the necessary time for either can be beneficial down the line.

Cons of early orthodontic treatment

A lot to handle

Beginning orthodontic treatment at an early age can require a lot of a child and their parent. It may be a lot to take on, physically and mentally — for both parties involved. A parent may not want to put their young child through the discomfort and possible pains of beginning treatment early.

It’s not always effective

Orthodontic treatment aims to help straighten the teeth over time, however, it may not always be effective to begin this at an early age. If a child has buckteeth or an overbite, beginning treatment early on may not work efficiently. Early orthodontic treatment may only be effective and possible for children who have certain types of dental issues. Talking with the orthodontist about their options is best.

Orthodontic treatment at an early age can be beneficial for those parents who want to get their child’s teeth in the best shape possible, early on. However, not every child is ready to begin treatment early on. It’s best to way both the pros and cons as well as talk with their dentist and orthodontist about what’s best for their situation.
